8.1 INTRODUCTION Waveguide horn arrays are commonly used for producing scan beams and contour beams for a variety of high-frequency applications, such as radar, tracking, and satellite communications. They are also used as primary feeds for reflector antennas in communication satellites to produce multiple spot beams. The waveguide horn elements have the following useful features: (a) Horns are fairly easy to fabricate. (b) Horns have reasonable bandwidth performances, typically 5 25% return loss bandwidth. (c) The size of a horn aperture is independent of the operating frequency; thus the element gain can be adjusted as required. (d) A horn element has very low RF loss; thus it can be used at very high frequencies such as millimeter-wave bands. (e) Horns have large power handling capacities. Compared to a microstrip patch array, a horn array has higher profile but may be of comparable weight. In this chapter we primarily focus on the radiation characteristics of waveguide horn arrays. The chapter begins with linearly flared square horn arrays. We briefly discuss the method of analysis followed by the return loss and scan characteristics of such arrays. Numerical results reveal that a grazing lobe may cause scan blindness for an array of small-aperture horns. For an array of largeaperture horns, a grazing mode typically causes a minor dent or dip in the active element pattern, but serious scan blindness does not generally happen. A simplified
